The Underground Atlas app is a stand-alone android application to support the use of the respective website (http://u-atlas.metal.ntua.gr). The Underground Atlas project is an innovative effort to register, characterize and depict sites constructed in the subsurface around the world hosting various uses.
With the use of the app the user, through his mobile device, can explore the various underground sites found worldwide and go through their description and individual characteristics. Most importantly though, the users can contribute a particular new underground site of their liking by submitting relevant info (location, photo, description, etc.) to the Underground Atlas project. This can be made on-the-go using the mobile device’s GPS and camera capabilities provided there is an active internet connection.
Both the website and the app have been developed by the Laboratory of Mining and Environmental Technology (http://www.minetech.metal.ntua.gr) of the National Technical University of Athens (http://www.ntua.gr), on behalf of ACUUS (Associated research Centers for the Urban Underground Space, http://www.acuus.org).
